Vintage British Captain Black B3 Estate Pipe.
A vintage, quality estate pipe in the straight billiard shape. Stamped “Captain Black” and “Made in England” to the shank. Stamped “B3” to opposite side. Spiral stinger (metal insert inside the stem to condense and trap tar and moisture) present. In overall good vintage condition. Kindly view images above for more detail.
An interesting example because Captain Black is best known as an American pipe tobacco brand, but for many years the brand also marketed pipes made by established English and European manufacturers.
Captain Black A private-label pipe sold under the Captain Black tobacco brand rather than by the actual manufacturer.
Made in England Indicates the pipe was manufactured in England, most likely between the 1960s and early 1980s, before production of many private-label pipes shifted elsewhere.
B3 This is almost certainly a shape number.
Many collectors believe English-made Captain Black pipes were produced by respected factories such as Comoy’s, GBD, or other members of the Oppenheimer/Cadogan group, although definitive factory attribution is often impossible without additional markings.
